FAQs

Can anybody be hypnotised?

It is a fallacy that some people are unable to be hypnotised as the hypnotic state is a natural and normal one. Science tells us that we fall into a hypnotic state about seven times every hour. Every one of us has to pass through a hypnotic state to fall asleep and through another hypnotic state to awaken. Every driver has experienced the state of highway hypnosis and there isn’t a person alive who hasn’t day dreamed and these are all states akin to hypnosis.
It is obvious that those who think they may be unable to be hypnotised imagine hypnosis to be a state that is abnormal and unusual and this belief can prevent them from relaxing and allowing hypnosis to happen.  It is our job as a qualified Hypnotherapist to put the client at ease and explain how they can get the best out of the session.

How often will I need to see the hypnotherapist?

This all depends on the type of problem we’re working through and the progress that’s being made. Hypnotherapy works best when the person undergoing the work is motivated and has a real desire to change their current circumstances. We tend to see clients on a weekly basis and after 3-4 sessions are completed we will review their progress. Of course, every client is different and we tailor the therapy according to their needs.

How much does it cost?

The Therapist will discuss the options available at the consultation and give you all the details and costs.  There is a cancellation fee of €50 if appointments are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is a safe and gentle practice that aims to bring health, wellness and balance to the mind, body and spirit. It involves sitting in a comfortable chair, listening to your therapists words with the goal of getting you to a real state of relaxation. In the hands of a professional therapist very little can go wrong but if any issue did arise you will be guided naturally from the trance-like state.

Will I be aware of what is happening?

At all times you will be aware of what is happening. Hypnosis is not the same as being asleep, any surrounding noise or sensations you will still be able to hear and feel. When you hear your therapists voice you will likely remember some of what was said afterwards but not every word. That is perfectly normal, as even under non-trance states you wouldn’t necessarily remember every word said.

Will I be in control?

At all times you will remain in full control. The therapist is there as a guide and cannot make you do anything against your will. If you can think of it like driving a car, the therapist is in the back navigating but because you’re in the driving seat you determine the route taken.

Could I remain Hypnotised?

No. If a trance was not terminated, the person would either fall asleep and awaken naturally or they would simply get bored and get up and leave.

Will I be asleep during the Hypnosis  session ?

Hypnosis has nothing to do with sleep. If you fall asleep during a session the first thing we will do is wake you up. We need you to be awake to take the attitude “I like it and I want it”. If you were exhausted you could fall asleep and if the Therapist were to leave the room, you would simply wake up as you normally would after having a nap.

Can the Hypnotherapist control me and make me do things I don’t want too?

We as hypnotists dedicate our lives to helping people take back control. Whether it is eliminating bad habits, changing feelings or removing inappropriate fears, it is all about giving our clients control. If we were to give you inappropriate suggestions you would simply not take the attitude “I like that suggestion and I want it” and it would be ineffective. In fact all you would have to do it decide to open your eyes and leave.

How safe is Hypnosis?

The simplest measure of the safety of hypnosis is to look at the insurance costs: At the Richdale Clinic we have public liability and professional indemnity to the value of €5M. A doctor will pay many thousands for insurance per year for professional indemnity. We have the same level of cover and it costs us €180 per year. There is a reason for this. Because you have the option, if you accept or reject the suggestions we give you, it is impossible for us to do anything other than bring positive change to you.
